The act or the job of being in charge of something while it is done — the noun for . It names the control itself, not the person and not the task. "The work was carried out under the superintendence of the county engineer." That phrase, "under the superintendence of", is where you will meet the word nearly every time. It is formal and slightly old — the language of contracts, official reports, church records, nineteenth-century books, and plaques on old buildings. Modern writing prefers supervision, management, or simply "run by" or "overseen by". It is uncountable: you say a lot of superintendence, not two superintendences. Read it as "someone with authority was watching over this and answering for it" — it carries responsibility, not just eyes on the job.
