To be in charge of a job while it is being done — watching the work, directing the people doing it, and making sure it is done properly. Not doing the work yourself, and not just watching either: you have the authority to say how it goes. "An engineer superintended the building of the bridge." "Who superintends the loading of the ships?" This is a formal, rather old-fashioned word. It lives in official writing, reports, job descriptions, and older books. In ordinary speech we say oversee, be in charge of, supervise, or run. If you say "I superintended the barbecue" people will smile, because the word is far too grand for a barbecue — though English speakers do sometimes use it that way on purpose, as a joke. It takes an object (superintend something), and the object is usually an activity or process rather than a person: you superintend the work, the arrangements, the election, the building — you supervise staff.
