A computer that is far more powerful than an ordinary one — the kind used to do enormous amounts of calculation, such as predicting the weather, modelling how a new medicine behaves, simulating the climate, or training large AI models. A supercomputer is not one fast machine on a desk. In practice it is a room, or a whole building, full of thousands of processors wired together and working on one problem at the same time, with heavy cooling to stop it overheating. Countries and universities own them, and it is normal for news to report which country currently has the fastest one. The word is relative and it moves: a supercomputer from thirty years ago is weaker than the phone in your pocket today, so the word always means 'far ahead of what is normal right now'. People also use it loosely and for anything powerful, including the human brain — 'your brain is a supercomputer'.
組成super- 'above, beyond the normal' + computer. The prefix super- came from Latin super 'above, over'. Computer traces back to Latin computare 'to count up, to reckon' (con- 'together' + putare 'to reckon').
