- 1
The quality of being sumptuous — that is, of looking and feeling very rich, very expensive, and made without worrying about cost. It is the noun for that quality: not the thing itself, but the richness of it. You use it about food, cloth, rooms, furniture, clothes, and about art and films that show such things. A meal has sumptuousness when there is far more food than anyone needs, and all of it costly. A room has sumptuousness when the curtains are heavy silk, the wood is dark and polished, and everything has been chosen to please the eye. The word carries a feeling of the senses — of touching, tasting, seeing. That is what separates it from words like 'expensive' or 'costly', which only talk about money. Something can cost a great deal and have no sumptuousness at all (a plain grey machine, say). Sumptuousness is money you can feel with your body. It is a formal, written word. You will meet it in reviews of films and hotels, in writing about history and about art, in travel writing and advertisements — almost never in ordinary speech. If you said it to a friend at dinner it would sound like a joke, and often people do use it that way, half-laughing, when the food is a bit too much. Though actually — it is not always praise. Because the word suggests spending with no limit, it can carry a small shadow of 'too much', of waste, of showing off. When a writer describes the sumptuousness of a palace while the people outside were hungry, that shadow is the whole point. Whether it sounds or critical depends on the sentence around it, so read the sentence, not the word alone.
奢華、華麗(多指看得到摸得到的鋪張講究,帶點「過頭」的味道)
組成sumptuous + -ness. The ending -ness turns a describing word into the name of that quality (kind → kindness, dark → darkness), so sumptuousness is simply 'being sumptuous'. Sumptuous itself goes back to a Latin word for spending money — the idea of great cost sits inside the word from the start.
