Subversively describes doing something in a way that quietly undermines authority, a rule, or what people expect — working against the thing from inside rather than attacking it openly. Two rather different flavours share the one word. In the political flavour, it means secretly and dangerously, in a way a government would punish: acting subversively, distributing pamphlets subversively. This use is fairly rare as an adverb; people more often say the noun subversion or the adjective subversive. Much more common today is the cultural flavour, used about art, comedy, writing, fashion and advertising. Here it means slyly, cheekily, in a way that looks obedient on the surface but is actually mocking or overturning something underneath: "the show is subversively funny," "she dresses subversively," "a subversively sweet children's book that is really about grief." In this use the word is admiring — it praises cleverness and nerve. Notice how often it sits right in front of an adjective (subversively gentle, subversively cheerful), where it creates a little clash: the surface is soft, the intention is not. It belongs to educated, written English — reviews, essays, cultural journalism. You will read it far more often than you will hear it in conversation.
