1. 1

A suburbanite is a person who lives in the suburbs — the quieter residential areas around the edge of a city, where people usually have houses rather than apartments, and travel into the city to work. The plain fact of where somebody lives is not really the point of this word, though. Suburbanite is a label put on people, usually by writers or by city-dwellers, and it usually carries a small sneer. It suggests a comfortable, safe, slightly dull life: a car, a lawn, a long commute, the same opinions as the neighbours, not much art or risk. "Bored suburbanites" is almost a set phrase. Someone who lives in a suburb will rarely introduce themselves as a suburbanite; they will say "I live in Xindian" or "we're out in the suburbs." So it is a word for describing others, common in journalism, novels and social comment, and it belongs to fairly formal or literary written English. The tone can be neutral in a piece of serious geography or marketing writing — "suburbanites spend more on cars" — but even then it is holding the people at arm's length, as a type rather than as individuals. There is no strong female or male sense to it; it applies to anyone.

    郊區居民(帶點貶意,暗示生活安逸、無趣、跟鄰居一個樣)

組成suburban + -ite. The suffix -ite makes a person who belongs to a place or a group (as in Israelite, socialite), and it very often adds a faint dismissive tone in English, as if the person were a specimen of a type. Underneath, suburb is Latin sub- (near, under) + urbs (city) — the settlement lying just under the city.
