Subterfuge is getting what you want by a trick, by hiding your real aim rather than by open force or an honest request. It works two ways: as an uncountable word for that whole way of behaving ('he got the job by subterfuge'), and as a countable word for one particular trick ('she used a clever subterfuge to get inside'). The in it is real but usually mild — it suggests cleverness and concealment more than crime. Spies, children avoiding homework and characters in novels all use subterfuge; a person who steals your money is doing something worse and plainer than that. It is a literary, slightly old-fashioned word, common in books, news writing and spy stories; in daily speech people say 'a trick', 'sneaky', or 'he went behind my back'. It often carries a hint of admiration for the cleverness even while .
組成subter- (secretly, below — related to sub- 'under') + fugere (to flee). Latin subterfugio meant 'to escape secretly'. So the picture is slipping away underneath, out of sight, rather than facing something head on.
