Subsidization is the act or practice of subsidizing — of a government or organization paying part of the cost of something so that the price to the public stays low, or so that a business or activity can survive. Rice farming, public buses, electricity, university tuition, health insurance: when the true cost is higher than what people pay, the gap is being filled by someone, and that filling is subsidization. Two things to notice. First, it is the heaviest word in its own family. The verb is subsidize, the money itself is a subsidy, and subsidization is the abstract noun for the whole practice — which means it appears mostly in economics writing, policy papers and trade disputes, where people argue about whether a country is subsidizing its industries unfairly. In ordinary sentences English much prefers 'subsidies' or the verb: 'the government subsidizes buses' is far more natural than 'the subsidization of buses'. Second, spelling. Subsidization with a z is the standard American form; British writing often uses subsidisation with an s, though Oxford style keeps the z. Taiwan textbooks usually follow the American spelling. You will also meet a fixed phrase in economics: cross-subsidization, where a company charges one group of customers more so it can charge another group less.
