The noun for what happens when someone : the turning of a desire one cannot act on — a sexual one — into work, art, sport, or some other thing society accepts. It names both the process and the general idea. 'Freud saw art as a kind of sublimation.' You meet it mostly in psychology, criticism, and serious essays; it is not a word people use over dinner. As with the verb, everyday use has it to cover any strong feeling redirected into something useful. The same noun also does duty in chemistry and physics for a solid going straight to gas without melting — that is the sense a student is likeliest to have met first, in a science class. In recent years it also names a printing method, 'dye sublimation', used for putting pictures on mugs and shirts, so you may see it on shopping sites with no psychological meaning at all. It is uncountable in most uses, though writers do say 'a sublimation of' something.
組成sublimate + -ion, the ending that turns a verb into the name of its action or result — like 'create' → 'creation'. Behind it, Latin sublimare 'to raise up'.
