The subjunctive is a special verb form used for things that are not being stated as facts — wishes, doubts, imaginary situations, and demands about what someone should do.
The subjunctive假設語氣 is是 a special verb form一種特殊的動詞形式,used for things that are not being stated as facts用在不被當作事實陳述的事情上——wishes, doubts, imaginary situations, and demands about what someone should do像是願望、懷疑、假想情境,以及要求某人該做什麼的情況。
English still has it, but it hides, because in most sentences the subjunctive form looks exactly like a form you already know. You meet it in two main places.
English英文 still has it仍然保留著,but但 it hides它藏起來了,because因為 in most sentences在大多數句子裡 the subjunctive form假設語氣的形式 looks exactly like a form you already know看起來跟你已經知道的形式一模一樣。in two main places在兩個主要的地方 You meet it你會遇到它。
First, in unreal 'if' sentences and wishes, where 'was' becomes 'were': 'If I were you, I'd take the job', 'I wish it were Friday'. Second, after verbs and of asking, ordering, and advising, where the verb loses its ending: 'The doctor insists that he rest', 'It's essential that she be there by nine' — not 'rests', not 'is'.
First第一,in unreal 'if' sentences and wishes在不真實的『if』假設句和願望句裡,where 'was' becomes 'were''was'會變成'were':'If I were you, I'd take the job'如果我是你,我會接下這份工作,'I wish it were Friday'我真希望現在是星期五。Second第二,after verbs and adjectives of asking, ordering, and advising在要求、命令、建議一類的動詞和形容詞後面,where the verb loses its ending動詞會失去字尾變化:'The doctor insists that he rest'醫生堅持他要休息,'It's essential that she be there by nine'她必須九點前到場才行——not 'rests', not 'is'不是'rests',也不是'is'。
The word is both a noun ('the verb is in the subjunctive') and an adjective ('the subjunctive mood').
The word這個字 is既 both a noun是名詞,'the verb is in the subjunctive'如「the verb is in the subjunctive」這個動詞用假設語氣,and an adjective又是形容詞,'the subjunctive mood'如「the subjunctive mood」假設語氣的語氣。
Now the honest part your grammar book may not say: in real speech many people say 'If I was you', and in Britain 'The doctor insists that he should rest' is more usual than the bare 'rest'. Americans keep the bare subjunctive more strongly. So the subjunctive is alive in writing and in fixed phrases ('God save the Queen', 'be that as it may', 'come what may', 'if need be'), while everyday speech often works around it.
Now the honest part your grammar book may not say現在來說一個你的文法書可能沒講的老實話:in real speech在實際口語裡 many people say很多人會說 'If I was you'「If I was you」,and而 in Britain在英國 'The doctor insists that he should rest'「The doctor insists that he should rest」這種說法 than the bare 'rest'比單用'rest'原形的說法 is more usual更常見。Americans美國人 keep the bare subjunctive more strongly比較堅持用原形假設語氣。So所以 the subjunctive假設語氣 is alive依然活著 in writing and in fixed phrases在書面語和固定片語裡 ('God save the Queen', 'be that as it may', 'come what may', 'if need be')(像「God save the Queen」願神保佑女王、「be that as it may」話雖如此、「come what may」不管發生什麼事、「if need be」如果有必要的話),while everyday speech而日常口語 often works around it常常會避開它。
In Spanish, French, and other languages it is used far more, and it is much more visible there.
In Spanish, French, and other languages在西班牙文、法文和其他語言裡 it它 is used far more用得多很多,and而且 it它 is much more visible there在那裡也明顯得多。
組成From Latin 'subjunctivus', from 'sub' ('under') + 'jungere' ('to join'). Roman grammarians named it that because this verb form typically appears in a clause joined UNDER a main clause — the sub-joined verb. The picture is a verb attached beneath another sentence, not standing on its own as a plain statement.
