Suavely is the adverb of suave: doing something in a smooth, polished, socially confident way. It attaches to verbs of speaking and social behaviour above all — smiling suavely, replying suavely, suavely changing the subject. It carries the same doubleness as suave, and if anything carries it more strongly. When a writer says a character answered suavely, the reader usually understands that the answer was smooth on the surface and unhelpful or evasive underneath. It is a favourite word of novelists describing a man who is handling a situation — deflecting a question, calming a room, getting his way without seeming to try. That is why you find it in fiction and journalism far more often than in conversation. Almost nobody says it out loud in daily life. Because it points at manner rather than substance, suavely often sits next to a verb whose content is thin: he suavely assured them, he suavely denied everything.
