Think of a group of students deciding to act as one — that joining together is the picture inside union. A group like that needs somewhere to meet, eat, wait between classes and set out its club tables, so a building on campus becomes theirs. Over time the one name covers both: the people, and the place they work from. So student union may mean the group that asks the college to keep the library open later, or the building where the cheapest coffee on campus is sold.
