Stucco is a kind of plaster spread over the outside walls of a building — it goes on wet, sets hard, and gives a smooth or lightly rough surface that covers the bricks or blocks underneath and keeps the weather out. You see it everywhere in Mediterranean countries, in Spanish-style houses, and across much of the southern United States, usually painted white or a warm pale colour. There is a second, older use worth knowing: fine stucco was the material used to make shapes on ceilings and walls inside grand old buildings — flowers, leaves, faces moulded in plaster. So in an art or history book, 'stucco' may mean that fancy decoration rather than a plain wall covering. The word is uncountable ('the house is covered in stucco'), and it also works as an adjective in front of a noun — 'a stucco house', 'stucco walls' — and even as a verb, 'they stuccoed the front of the building', though that is builders' language. The Italian word came from an old Germanic word for a piece or a crust, which is also where German Stück 'piece' comes from.
