Strontium is a chemical element — a soft, silver-white metal, symbol Sr. It is not something you will ever hold; it reacts fast with air and water, so it is kept in oil. Two places you actually meet the name. First, and warning flares: strontium compounds burn a deep red, so the red in a is very often strontium. Second, and more seriously, the news. Strontium-90 is a radioactive form made in nuclear reactions, and it is dangerous in a particular way — the body treats it like calcium and stores it in bone, so it turns up in talk about Chernobyl, Fukushima, and nuclear tests. It is a noun only, uncountable; you would say 'strontium is used in…', never 'a strontium'. Say it STRON-tee-um; the -ium ending is the same one as in sodium and calcium.
組成strontian + -ium (the ending used for metal elements, as in sodium, calcium). Named in 1808 by the British chemist Humphry Davy after strontianite, a mineral named for Strontian, a village in Scotland where it was found — so this element carries a small Scottish place-name inside it.
