Magnesium is a light, silver-white metal. In the table of elements its sign is Mg. If you set a strip of it on fire, it burns with a bright white light — that is why old cameras used it in flash powder, and why it still turns up in and emergency flares. There is a lot of it in the earth’s crust, and your body needs a little of it to work well. “Milk of magnesia” is an old medicine for an upset stomach; the name is there because of this metal. Chemists and doctors use the word all the time. In ordinary talk you mostly meet it on a vitamin bottle or in a science lesson.

組成From New Latin magnēsium, from Ancient Greek μαγνησία (magnēsía), after Magnesia, a region in Thessaly. Coined by the British chemist Humphry Davy, as a change from his first idea, magnium.
