Stricken describes someone or something hit hard by trouble, illness, grief, or disaster — and still suffering from it. You can use it on its own before a noun ('the stricken city', 'a stricken look on her face'), or after a verb ('she was stricken with grief'). It is very common as the second half of a compound: , , , drought-stricken, horror-stricken. That pattern is the form will meet most. It is formal and literary — news reports, novels and speeches use it; friends chatting do not. It has a strong feeling of helplessness: a stricken person is not just unhappy but knocked flat, unable to act.
