A stowaway is a person who hides on a ship, a plane, a train or a so they can travel without being seen and without paying. The hiding is the heart of the word — someone in a lifeboat, in a container, in the wheel-well of an aircraft, staying quiet until the journey is over. The reason can be poverty, escape from danger, or simply adventure, and the word itself does not judge; it just says what the person did. It is one syllable-lump of a noun, and there is a matching verb: to stow away. 'He stowed away on a boat to Australia.' Notice the difference — the noun is written as one word, the verb as two. In stories and films a stowaway is often a hopeful character, a child or a young person who wants to see the world, so the word carries a small romance in fiction that real life does not always share. In news reports it is usually a serious story about a dangerous journey. People also use it for anything that travels along uninvited — a spider that came home in your suitcase, an extra that found its way into your bag.
組成stow（收好、藏放）+ away（走開、離開）。From the phrase stow away — you 'stow' yourself away just as you would stow a bag, out of sight in some corner of the ship.
