Storyboarding is the work of making a storyboard — drawing out a film, video or animation shot by shot, before anything is filmed. The -ing form points at the activity rather than at the finished sheet of drawings. So a storyboard is the thing you can hold; storyboarding is the afternoon you spent making it. "Storyboarding takes two days" is about the process; "the storyboard takes two pages" is about the object. Because it is an -ing word, it slides between two jobs and both are correct. It can act as a noun: "Storyboarding is the cheapest part of the whole production." And it can be the ongoing verb: "She is storyboarding the opening scene right now." You will also see it stuck in front of another noun — a storyboarding session, a storyboarding tool, a storyboarding app. Like storyboard itself, it has spread well beyond film. Teachers talk about storyboarding a lesson, designers about storyboarding a user's journey through an app, and people planning a talk about storyboarding their slides. In all of these it keeps the same core idea: work out the order visually, in cheap rough pictures, before committing to the expensive real thing.
