A stoker is a person whose job is to feed a big fire with coal — shovelling it into the furnace of a , a steam train, or a factory boiler. This was a real job for about a hundred years, and it was one of the hardest jobs there was: hot, black with dust, hour after hour of shovelling in a small metal room below deck. On ships they were sometimes called firemen, which confuses people today, because 'fireman' now usually means the person who puts OUT. The stoker made the fire, and made it bigger. Because almost nothing runs on shovelled coal any more, you now meet this word mostly in history books, old novels, and films about the Titanic — not in daily conversation. Note the shape of the word: a stoker is not a person who owns the fire or watches it, but the one doing the physical work of keeping it fed. The verb 'stoke' is still alive and is used loosely today for feeding any kind of fire, and also for feeding feelings — you can stoke someone's anger. But 'stoker', the noun, stayed with the old coal job and did not follow the verb into that wider use. So you would not call a person who makes people angry 'a stoker'.
組成stoke (to feed a fire, poke it) + -er (a person who does it). 'Stoke' came into English from Dutch, from a word meaning to poke or jab — which is exactly what you do to a coal fire with an iron bar.
