Stoke-on-Trent is a city in , in the middle of England, on the River Trent. It is the heart of an area called the , and since the late 1700s it has been famous for making china and pottery — , Spode and all come from there. In British minds the city stands for that one industry the way Detroit stands for cars. It is unusual among English cities because it was formed by joining six separate towns together in 1910, which is why people from there often name their own town (Hanley, Burslem, Stoke) rather than the city. In everyday speech the British simply say 'Stoke'; the full name appears on maps, letters and news reports. The football club is Stoke City, and 'a wet Tuesday night in Stoke' is a famous English joke about a hard, cold, unglamorous away match — a small piece of culture worth knowing if you follow football.
組成Two names joined by 'on': Stoke, an old English place-name element meaning an outlying farm or settlement (it appears in dozens of English place names), plus the River Trent it stands on. Adding 'on-River' to a town name distinguishes it from all the other Stokes in England — the same trick as Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Stratford-upon-Avon.
