A stocky person is short and built, with a solid, strong-looking body. The key is that all three go together: not just short, and not just heavy, but short with wide shoulders and thick arms and legs, so they look sturdy rather than fat. Think of a wrestler, a rugby player, or a farmer with a low, firm frame. It is a mostly neutral word, and often a quietly positive one — it suggests strength and steadiness. That said, some people hear it as a polite way of saying someone is heavy, so it is safer used about a stranger you are describing than about the person in front of you. It is used mainly of people, sometimes of animals like ponies or dogs, and only rarely of plants meaning short and thick-stemmed. Words that sit near it: 'burly' is bigger and taller, 'chubby' is soft and about fat, 'stout' is rounder and older-sounding.
組成stock（古英語 stocc，樹幹、木頭塊）+ -y（形容詞字尾，「像…的」）。所以 stocky 本來的畫面就是「像一段樹幹那樣又短又粗又結實」——這個畫面到今天還很準。
