1. 1

Stigmatization is what happens when society treats people as if they should feel ashamed of who they are, what has happened to them, or how they behave — treating them as marked, dirty, or less worthy. It is an uncountable noun, and it is the name of the process, not of the people or the feeling: the doing of it. It is a formal, academic word. You will find it in health writing, sociology, news reports, and policy documents — "the stigmatization of people with HIV", "the stigmatization of mental illness", "fear of stigmatization stops patients from seeking help." In everyday conversation people would say "people are ashamed to talk about it" or "there's a lot of stigma around it" instead. Two things to notice. First, the whole word family: to (verb), stigma (the shame itself, uncountable), (adjective — "a group"), stigmatization (the process). Second, the spelling: British writing often uses -isation (stigmatisation), American writing uses -ization; both are correct, so just be consistent. It is a long word — say it stig-ma-ti-ZAY-shun, with the stress near the end.

組成stigmatize + -ation, where -ation names the process or the act. Going back further: Ancient Greek στίγμα (stígma, a mark pricked into the skin) → στιγματίζω (stigmatízō, to mark) → Medieval Latin stigmatizō → English stigmatize; the ending -ation comes through Latin -ātiō and Old French -ation into Middle English -acioun.
