A stigma is a strong feeling of shame or that a lot of people attach to something, even when there's nothing truly shameful about it - like the stigma around mental illness, or around losing a job. It makes people hide the truth or feel bad about themselves for something they often can't help. (The word also has small technical meanings - in biology, the part of a flower that receives ; in medicine, a small mark on the skin - but the "social shame" meaning is the one students meet most.)
