A stick-up is a robbery where someone points a gun at people and makes them hand over money. It is a noun, and it comes from the words a shouts in old films: "Stick 'em up!" — meaning "put your hands up in the air." So the name of the crime comes from what the victims are told to do with their hands. It is used most often for banks, small shops, and petrol stations — a face-to-face robbery with a weapon, not quiet stealing. The word feels old-fashioned and a bit like a film. Real news reports today would more likely say "an armed robbery" or "a hold-up." You will meet "stick-up" mostly in crime stories, in films about the 1930s in America, and in jokes. Note the writing: the noun is "a stick-up" (with a , sometimes "stickup"), but the verb is two words — "they stuck up a bank." There is a completely separate everyday use: "stick up" as a verb can mean to point upwards ("his hair sticks up"), and "stick up for someone" means to defend them. Those are not this word.
