This is the adverb: it means 'in the way the fixed, over-simple picture says'. It has two main homes in a sentence. Most often it sits right in front of an adjective — 'stereotypically male', 'stereotypically shy', 'stereotypically British' — and marks that adjective as belonging to the cliché rather than to the real person. When you say 'he is stereotypically Italian', you are not describing him so much as pointing at the stock picture and saying he happens to line up with it. It can also open a sentence — 'Stereotypically, engineers are bad at small talk, but…' — where it works as a quiet warning label: what follows is the common belief, and I am about to complain about it or contradict it. That is a very common move in writing, so watch for the 'but' that usually follows. Register: essays, reviews, journalism, thoughtful conversation. Slightly long and formal-sounding, so nobody uses it much when speaking fast.

組成stereotypical + -ly, the ordinary English ending that turns an adjective into an adverb. Underneath, stereotype is a printer's word: Greek stereos 'solid' + typos 'a stamped mark' — the solid plate that prints the same page over and over. The -ly ending goes right back to Old English -līċe, from a Germanic word meaning 'body, form', so it originally meant something like 'having the form of'. Stack them up: stereos + typos + -ical + -ly, four pieces in one long word.
