Someone whose job is climbing very tall structures — church steeples, factory chimneys, spires, towers — to repair or paint them or take them down. It is a real trade with a long history, especially in Britain, from the days when every factory had a tall brick chimney that needed pointing and repairing. A steeplejack works high up on ladders and ropes fixed to the outside of the building, which is why the job has a slightly heroic, old-fashioned feel; people say the word with a kind of respect. You will meet it in news stories, local history and old books more often than in modern job lists, because there are not many steeplejacks left. It is one word, no hyphen, and it is used for the person of any gender.
