A staycation is a holiday where you stay at home, or near home, instead of travelling somewhere far away. You still take the days off work — that is the important part. It is a holiday, not just a normal week. You might sleep late, visit a museum in your own city, eat at a nice restaurant, go to a hot spring an hour away, and then come home to your own bed. The word became common around 2008, when many people had less money and could not afford to fly anywhere, and newspapers and magazines used it a lot. It still has that slightly newspaper feeling — it is a light, friendly word, not a formal one, and you will see it in travel articles and advertisements more than in serious writing. People use it loosely, too. Some people mean 'I stayed in my own house the whole week.' Others mean 'I stayed in a hotel in my own city.' Others just mean 'I did not go abroad.' Nobody argues about which one is correct. There is also a small feeling attached to it: sometimes people say it a little , as if a real holiday would have meant going somewhere, and sometimes people say it proudly, as if staying home is the smarter choice. You can hear either one, depending on the speaker. It is almost always a noun. A few people use it as a verb — 'we staycationed last summer' — but that still sounds playful, and I would not write it in an essay.
