Squirrelly describes someone who cannot sit still — restless, fidgety, jumping from one thing to the next, like a squirrel darting around a tree. You hear it most about children at the end of a long class, or about a person who has drunk too much coffee: "the kids get squirrelly right before the holiday." It carries a second meaning that students often miss: a squirrelly person can also be one you do not quite trust — shifty, evasive, hard to pin down, always slipping away from a straight answer. Which meaning is in play usually depends on whether you are talking about a body that will not be still or an answer that will not be straight, and sometimes both at once. It is casual American English, mildly negative but not harsh, and it is also used of things that behave unpredictably — a squirrelly car pulls to one side, squirrelly data cannot be relied on.
