A squirrel is a small animal with a big bushy tail that lives in trees, runs along branches and walls, and eats nuts and seeds. In Taiwan you see them in parks and on campuses; in Europe and North America they are one of the most common wild animals in cities, so English speakers talk about them a lot. The word is also a verb: to squirrel something away means to hide it somewhere safe and keep it for later, usually a little bit at a time and often secretly — "she squirrelled away a few hundred dollars every month." This comes straight from the animal's habit of burying nuts before winter. The verb almost always appears with away; "squirrel money" on its own sounds wrong. As an image, squirrels also stand for being busy, quick, and easily distracted, which is where the adjective squirrelly comes from.

From Middle English squirel, from Old French escurel, from Latin sciūrus, from Ancient Greek skíouros 'shadow-tail'.
經古法文來自希臘文 skiouros，字面是「影子尾巴」。
組成來自古法語 escurel，再往上是拉丁文 sciurus，源頭是希臘文 skiouros：skia（影子）+ oura（尾巴）——「用尾巴當影子的動物」，因為松鼠會把大尾巴翹起來蓋在自己身上。英文原本的說法是 acweorna，後來被這個法語外來字取代了。
