Something squashy is soft enough that it gives way when you press it, and changes shape as it does. A squashy cushion, a squashy sofa, a squashy tomato, squashy mud under your shoes. The feeling is pleasant more often than not — a squashy armchair is one you sink into — but it turns negative with food, where squashy usually means overripe or crushed: 'the peaches at the bottom of the bag had gone squashy.' It is an informal, rather British-sounding word, common in children's books and in talking about furniture and fruit. It describes how a thing feels under your hand or your body, so it works best for things you touch. Note the related but different squishy, which is nearly the same and even more informal, and often adds the idea of wetness or a small sound. If a student says squishy where a book says squashy, nobody will be confused.
