Describing a decision or action that is made suddenly, right then, with no planning at all — 'a spur-of-the-moment decision', 'a spur-of-the-moment trip to the beach'. The feeling is usually light and a little rather than careless: you were not being irresponsible, you just followed a sudden urge. Note the . When it sits in front of a noun like this, it takes ; when it comes after the verb it loses them and takes 'on the': 'We decided on the spur of the moment.' Both are extremely common, and the phrase without is the older, base form.
