Describes cloth, or a pattern on cloth, covered with a small repeated design of little flowers or leafy stems — each one like a tiny sprig. Sprigged cotton, a sprigged dress, sprigged wallpaper. The picture it gives is a light, pretty, old-fashioned country look: small scattered flowers on a pale background, the kind of fabric you see in nineteenth-century paintings, in Jane Austen films, or on the curtains in an English grandmother's house. It is a quiet word — you will meet it in novels, in writing about fashion and antiques, and on the labels of expensive traditional fabric, but almost never in ordinary speech. A Taiwanese student is far more likely to say "floral" or "with a small flower print", and that is perfectly fine; know sprigged so you can read it, not so you must say it. It always goes in front of the thing it describes, and it always means the pattern is small and scattered — a big bold flower print is floral, not sprigged.
