Describing a product that comes in a can or bottle and goes on as a fine mist: spray-on , spray-on , spray-on paint, spray-on insulation. It answers the question 'how do you put it on?' — you spray it rather than rub, brush or pour it. It always sits in front of the noun (spray-on tan), never after it — you cannot say 'the tan is spray-on' comfortably; say 'it's a spray-on tan' or 'you spray it on'. Keep the when it is one description; without it, 'spray on' is just the verb plus a small word: 'spray it on the wall'. There is also a joking use for very tight clothes — 'those jeans look spray-on', as if the fabric had been sprayed straight onto the legs.
