A speller is a person, described by how good or bad they are at spelling words. The word almost never stands alone — you nearly always hear it with a word in front telling you the quality: 'a good speller', 'a bad speller', 'a terrible speller', 'a natural speller'. If someone just said 'He is a speller', an English speaker would be confused and wait for the rest of the sentence. Because of this, the whole point of the word is the judgement attached to it. It is a friendly, everyday word — parents say it about their children, teachers say it about their students. Notice too that it describes a lasting quality of the person, not one moment. 'I'm a bad speller' means it has always been hard for me, not that I made one mistake this morning. People often say it about themselves, half as an apology and half as a joke, before sending a message: 'Sorry, I'm a terrible speller.' In American schools a 'speller' can also mean a spelling textbook — an old-fashioned use you may meet in older stories, but not in daily talk today.
拼字(能力)好/不好的人;常說「我拼字很爛」
組成spell(把字母按順序說出或寫出)+ -er(做這件事的人)。這個 -er 用在人身上時,常常帶有「習慣性、長期如此」的味道,不只是「現在正在做」。
