A person — or a company, or nowadays usually a program running on somebody's behalf — that sends the same message to enormous numbers of people who did not ask for it. Advertising, scams, links you should not click. The word is always an insult; nobody hands out a business card saying 'spammer'. Note the shape: spam is the message and the verb ('stop spamming me'), a spammer is the sender, and spamming is what they do. It has spread well beyond email. In a group chat or an online game, a spammer is anyone who floods the channel — posting the same sticker twenty times, or shouting the same advertisement. In gaming it stretches further still: to spam a button means to press it over and over, and someone who wins only by doing that gets called a spammer with real contempt. The common thread is always volume without thought — the same thing repeated until it drowns out everything else. Note the doubled m: spam + -er gives spammer, not 'spamer'.
