It is the adverb of 'spacious', so it describes how something is built, arranged or laid out — 'a spaciously designed apartment', 'the tables are spaciously arranged'. Be honest with your students about this word: it is rare, and it is almost never used alone. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred it appears in front of a past participle in a description written to sell or praise something — 'spaciously planned', 'spaciously laid out', 'spaciously furnished' — so you meet it in estate agents' advertisements, hotel brochures and design magazines far more than in speech. In ordinary conversation nobody says it; people say 'there's lots of room' or 'it feels really open'. It carries the estate agent's warm, slightly flattering tone, which is worth hearing, because that tone tells you the writer wants you to buy something.
