A part of London on the south side of the River Thames, right across from the City of London. Note the spelling trap first: it is said "SUTH-uk" — the middle 'w' is silent and the 'k' ending is soft, so it sounds nothing like it looks.
A part of London on the south side of the River Thames這是倫敦泰晤士河南岸的一個區域, right across from the City of London正好和倫敦市(City of London)隔河相望。Note the spelling trap first先注意拼字的陷阱: it is said SUTH-uk — the middle 'w' is silent and the 'k' ending is soft它唸作「SUTH-uk」——中間的 w 不發音,結尾的 k 是輕音—— so it sounds nothing like it looks所以聽起來跟看起來完全不一樣。
Southwark is old. For centuries it sat just outside the control of the City authorities across the river, so it filled up with the things the City would not allow: theatres, bear-pits, inns, prisons. That is why Shakespeare's Globe Theatre stood there, and a modern copy of it stands there today. Southwark Cathedral is the other famous building — a large, important church, much older than the more famous cathedrals of central London.
Southwark is oldSouthwark 是個古老的地方。For centuries好幾個世紀以來, it sat just outside the control of the City authorities across the river它剛好位在河對岸倫敦市當局管不到的地方, so it filled up with the things the City would not allow: theatres, bear-pits, inns, prisons所以裡面塞滿了倫敦市不允許的東西:劇院、鬥熊場、旅店、監獄。That is why Shakespeare's Globe Theatre stood there這就是為什麼莎士比亞的環球劇場(Globe Theatre)當年就蓋在那裡, and a modern copy of it stands there today而它的現代複製版今天也還立在那裡。Southwark Cathedral is the other famous buildingSouthwark 大教堂是另一棟有名的建築—— a large, important church, much older than the more famous cathedrals of central London一座宏偉、重要的教堂,比倫敦市中心那些更有名的大教堂都要古老得多。
Today Southwark is one of London's official boroughs (a borough is an administrative district of the city, with its own local council), and it covers a bigger area than the old riverside district: the Tate Modern art gallery, Borough Market, and The are all in it. So when someone says "Southwark" you have to listen for which one they mean — the historic patch by the river, or the whole modern borough. In everyday speech more often name the smaller neighbourhoods inside it (Bermondsey, Peckham, Dulwich) than say "Southwark" at all.
Today Southwark is one of London's official boroughs (a borough is an administrative district of the city, with its own local council)今天 Southwark 是倫敦正式的自治市之一(borough 是這座城市裡有自己地方議會的行政區), and it covers a bigger area than the old riverside district涵蓋的範圍比舊時河邊那一小塊要大得多: the Tate Modern art gallery, Borough Market, and The Shard are all in it泰特現代美術館(Tate Modern)、Borough Market 市場,還有碎片大廈(The Shard)全都在裡面。So when someone says Southwark所以當有人說「Southwark」時, you have to listen for which one they mean你得聽清楚他指的是哪一個—— the historic patch by the river, or the whole modern borough是河邊那塊歷史悠久的地方,還是整個現代的自治市。In everyday speech在日常說話裡, Londoners more often name the smaller neighbourhoods inside it (Bermondsey, Peckham, Dulwich)倫敦人更常直接說裡面比較小的社區名字(Bermondsey、Peckham、Dulwich), than say Southwark at all而不是說「Southwark」。
組成From Old English Sūþġeweorc — sūþ "south" + ġeweorc "defensive work, fort". So the name literally means "the southern fort": the fortified place guarding the south end of London Bridge.
