Somerset is a county — one of the areas England is divided into — in the southwest of the country, not far from Bristol and the sea. It is mostly green farming land: fields, cows, apple trees, and the Somerset Levels, which are very flat and very wet, so flooding is normal news there. Its main town for local government is Taunton, and the famous cathedral city of Wells is there too. The thing Somerset is best known for is cider — apple wine, quite strong — and old-style farm cider there is called . English people also hear Somerset in the accent: the West Country way of speaking, with a strong r sound, which sadly gets used in films to mean 'farmer, slow, country person'. That is a lazy joke, not a fact about the people. One more thing worth knowing: , the biggest music festival in Britain, happens on a farm in Somerset every summer, so young people may know the county from music before they know it from cider. Note that a somersault (rolling head over heels) has nothing to do with this place; the two words only look like family.
組成From Old English Sumorsǣte, a short form of Sumortūnsǣte, meaning 'the people living at, or belonging to, Sumortūn' — that is, Somerton, a town in the county. Sumortūn itself looks like 'summer town'. Another suggestion is *Seo-mere-sætan, 'the settlers by the sea lakes', which would fit the wet, flat land there.
