Dorset is a county in southwest England, on the Channel coast. It has many holiday towns by the sea, so English people often know it as a place for beaches, walks, and old stone towns. The writer Thomas Hardy set most of his novels there; he called the wider made-up country “,” but the real map under that name is largely Dorset. It is a place name, so it takes a capital D. You will see it on addresses, weather reports, and travel pages. There is also a sheep and a cheese named after the county, but this word is the place itself.

組成From the old name of the county town, Dorchester. Old English Dornwaraceaster mixed the British Latin name Durnovaria with -ceaster, a common ending for Roman towns. That long name was later cut down to Dornsǣte / Dorsǣte: the first part of the town name plus -sǣte, “the people who live there.” Middle English Dorsete became today’s Dorset.
