Solvency is the state of having enough money — or enough valuable things you could sell — to pay everything you owe. It is a money word, used about companies, banks, governments, and sometimes about a person. If a company is solvent, it can pay its debts; solvency is that condition, named as a thing. You will meet it mostly in business news, in bank rules, and in law: 'the bank must maintain solvency', 'questions were raised about the airline's solvency'. It is quite formal — in everyday speech people just say 'they can pay their bills' or 'they're not going broke'. Two things are worth noticing. First, solvency is about the long view: whether everything you own is worth more than everything you owe. That is different from having cash in your pocket right now, which is called liquidity. A company can own three buildings and still fail to pay this month's wages — solvent on paper, but out of cash. Second, because solvency is the opposite of going bankrupt, the word often appears exactly when people are worried. If you read that a company's solvency 'is not in doubt', someone has clearly been doubting it. There is also a completely separate word spelled the same way in the chemistry family — solvent, the liquid that dissolves things — but that one has no noun 'solvency'.
