Solvency is the state of having enough money — or enough valuable things you could sell — to pay everything you owe. It is a money word, used about companies, banks, governments, and sometimes about a person. If a company is solvent, it can pay its debts; solvency is that condition, named as a thing.
Solvency Solvency償債能力is the state of having enough money是指有足夠的錢的狀態— or enough valuable things you could sell或足夠可以賣掉換錢的值錢東西— to pay everything you owe可以還清你所欠的一切債務。It它is a money word是一個跟錢有關的詞, used about companies, banks, governments用來講公司、銀行、政府, and sometimes about a person有時候也用來講一個人。If a company is solvent如果一間公司是solvent有償債能力的, it can pay its debts它就能還清債務; solvency is that condition, named as a thingsolvency就是把這種狀態當成一個名詞來稱呼。
You will meet it mostly in business news, in bank rules, and in law: 'the bank must maintain solvency', 'questions were raised about the airline's solvency'. It is quite formal — in everyday speech people just say 'they can pay their bills' or 'they're not going broke'.
You你will meet it mostly in business news, in bank rules, and in law主要會在財經新聞、銀行法規和法律裡遇到它: 'the bank must maintain solvency'「the bank must maintain solvency這間銀行必須維持償債能力」, 'questions were raised about the airline's solvency'「questions were raised about the airline's solvency有人對這間航空公司的償債能力提出質疑」。It它is quite formal相當正式— in everyday speech日常說話people just say 'they can pay their bills'大家就直接說「they can pay their bills他們付得起帳單」or 'they're not going broke'或「they're not going broke他們不會破產」。
Two things are worth noticing. First, solvency is about the long view: whether everything you own is worth more than everything you owe. That is different from having cash in your pocket right now, which is called liquidity. A company can own three buildings and still fail to pay this month's — solvent on paper, but out of cash.
Two things有兩件事are worth noticing值得注意。First第一, solvency is about the long viewsolvency講的是長期的角度: whether everything you own is worth more than everything you owe你擁有的一切,總價值是不是比你欠的一切還多。That那is different from having cash in your pocket right now跟你口袋裡現在有多少現金不一樣, which is called liquidity那個叫做liquidity流動性。A company一間公司can own three buildings可以擁有三棟大樓and still fail to pay this month's wages卻還是付不出這個月的薪水— solvent on paper帳面上是solvent有償債能力, but out of cash但手上沒有現金。
Second, because solvency is the opposite of going bankrupt, the word often appears exactly when people are worried. If you read that a company's solvency 'is not in doubt', someone has clearly been doubting it.
Second第二, because solvency is the opposite of going bankrupt因為solvency是破產的反面, the word often appears exactly when people are worried這個字常常剛好就出現在大家開始擔心的時候。If you read that a company's solvency 'is not in doubt'如果你讀到一間公司的solvency「is not in doubt沒有疑慮」, someone has clearly been doubting it那顯然已經有人在懷疑了。
There is also a completely separate word spelled the same way in the chemistry family — solvent, the liquid that things — but that one has no noun 'solvency'.
There is also a completely separate word spelled the same way in the chemistry family在化學的詞彙家族裡,還有一個拼法一樣、完全不同的字— solvent, the liquid that dissolves things— solvent溶劑,能溶解東西的液體— but that one has no noun 'solvency'但那個字沒有'solvency'這個名詞形式。
組成solvent(有能力償還債務的)+ -cy(把形容詞變成一個狀態的名詞,像 accurate → accuracy)。往前推,solvent 來自拉丁文 solvere「鬆開、解開」——把債務「解開」就是還清它。

solvencynoun
- 1
businessfinanceThe state of having enough funds or liquid assets to pay all of one's debts; the state of being solvent.
- This is often phrased in terms of whether they are facing liquidity or solvency problems; but I think it’s better phrased in terms of the possibility of self-fulfilling crises, a la Obstfeld.
