A soliloquy is a speech in a play in which a character, usually alone on stage, speaks their thoughts out loud so the audience can hear them. The other characters are not meant to hear it. It is the theatre's oldest way of letting us inside a person's head — Shakespeare's plays are full of them, and 'To be, or not to be' is the most famous in English. The plural is 'soliloquies'. Because a soliloquy is private thinking made audible, use it for the moments a character cannot say to anyone else: doubt, guilt, a plan they are ashamed of. Outside literature class, the word is stretched a little to mean any long stretch of talk where somebody is really speaking to themselves — a driver at traffic, a writer thinking aloud on the page. It is a formal, written word; if you just mean talking to yourself, say 'talking to himself'.
組成From Late Latin sōliloquium, built from sōlus 'alone' + loquī 'to speak' — 'alone-speech'. The word was coined as the title of a book by St Augustine, Soliloquia, in which he writes a conversation with himself.
