Hold two machines side by side. In the old one something has to move for the work to happen: a disk spins, a needle slides, a glass tube glows. In the new one nothing moves at all — the whole job takes place inside a firm block of material, and from the outside it is silent and still. That stillness is a useful way to hold solid-state. Whatever used to spin, glow, or slosh has been replaced by something solid.
