Solicitude is care and concern for another person's health, safety, or happiness. It is a warm word, but a formal and rather literary one — you will meet it in novels, , and careful writing far more often than in conversation. Nobody says 'thanks for your solicitude' to a friend; they say 'thanks for caring'. The feeling inside solicitude is gentle worry: you are concerned FOR someone, watching over them. So it fits older relatives, doctors, teachers, employers looking after staff. It is usually uncountable ('great solicitude'), and it takes 'for' — solicitude for the poor, solicitude for her son's future. Like , it can be used with a raised . When a writer says a politician showed 'sudden solicitude for farmers' just before an election, the word is doing quiet criticism: the care looks performed. Solicitude has one more thin, older use — concern about a matter, not a person ('solicitude about the outcome') — but you will rarely need it.

That word itself comes from sollus 'whole' + citus 'moved, stirred' — so the original picture is a person 'stirred up all over', shaken with worry. English kept the worry but turned it kind: the worry is now for someone else.
