A Greek who lived in Athens from about 470 to 399 BC, and one of the most famous names in Western thinking. He wrote nothing down. Everything we have comes from other people's writing, mostly from his student , so scholars argue about which ideas were really his and which were 's — that argument even has a name, 'the problem'. What he is remembered for is a habit: instead of telling people the answer, he asked question after question until the person discovered that what they were sure of did not hold together. He said his own wisdom was only knowing that he knew nothing. This powerful people in Athens, and in the end the city put him on trial, said he was corrupting the young and not respecting the gods, and sentenced him to death; he drank poison (). In English his name is also used loosely for any wise old . Say it 'SOCK-ra-teez' — three and the ending sounds like 'tees'.
組成A Greek personal name, Σωκράτης (Sōkrátēs), which came into English through Latin Socrates. The modern Greek name Sokratis is the same name.
