You will hear it most in university writing, in serious news articles, and in talks. It is a long, formal word, and people often use it as a signal: 'I am now going to talk about groups, not about individuals.' Sometimes it is used a bit loosely, just to make a normal opinion about society sound more scientific — when you meet it, it is worth asking whether the writer really has group evidence behind it.
