The white foam of little bubbles that sits on top of water when you put soap in it and move it around — in a sink of dishes, in a bath, in a bucket when you wash the car. The word is always plural: 'the soapsuds were everywhere', never 'a soapsud'. In everyday talk most people just say 'suds', or 'bubbles', or 'foam'. 'Soapsuds' as a full word sounds a little old-fashioned and slightly childlike — it belongs in a children's story about bath time, or in your grandmother's kitchen. It is not wrong today, just not the first word a young person reaches for. One extra thing worth knowing: 'suds' on its own is also American slang for beer, because beer has foam on top. 'Let's grab a few suds' means let's have a few beers. Nobody would say 'soapsuds' for beer — only the short form does that job.
