1. 1

The wound a snake makes when it bites you, especially a poisonous one — and, by extension, the whole medical emergency that follows. This is the word hospitals, health charities, and travel advice use: snakebite treatment, deaths from snakebite, a snakebite kit. Notice it works two ways. Countable, it is one event or one wound: "he was treated for a snakebite on his ankle". Uncountable, it is the problem in general: "snakebite kills tens of thousands of people every year", where you use no article and no -s. That second use is common in serious writing about health in South Asia and Africa, where farm workers are most at risk. Two smaller uses you may meet. In British pubs, snakebite is a drink, half lager and half cider — nothing to do with snakes. And in sports writing or storytelling, something can be "like a snakebite": sudden, unexpected, and damaging. First aid advice has changed, by the way: keep the person still and get to hospital; do not cut the wound or try to suck the poison out.
