A smokestack is a tall chimney that carries smoke away from a factory, a power station, an old steam train or a ship. It is a noun, and it is the American word; British speakers usually say chimney or, for the very tall industrial kind, chimney stack. The picture it gives is specific — not a house chimney but a big industrial pipe, often brick or steel, standing high above the roofline so the smoke goes out over people's heads. Because of that picture, the word does extra work. "Smokestack industries" means the old heavy industries — steel, coal, , cars — as opposed to computers and services; people say it when they mean an economy of the past, sometimes with respect for the jobs it gave and sometimes with a shrug at how dirty it was. On ships, the smokestack is called the funnel by sailors, and shipping companies paint their own colours on it so you can tell whose ship it is from far away.

組成smoke + stack. Stack here is the old English sense of a tall pile or column of something — a haystack is a tall pile of hay, and a chimney stack is the tall column of brick. So a smokestack is literally the column that the smoke goes up.
