A haystack is a large, firmly built pile of hay standing in a field. Farmers piled the cut, dry grass into this shape so rain would run off and the inside would stay dry enough to feed animals later. Today many farms use tight bales wrapped in plastic instead, so a real haystack is less common than it is in pictures and stories. People also use it in the saying a needle in a haystack: you are hunting for one tiny thing in a huge mess, and you will probably not find it.
