Smoke-free describes a place where smoking is not allowed — a smoke-free restaurant, a smoke-free office, a smoke-free campus. It is an adjective, usually written with a before a noun, and it can also sit after the verb: "the whole building is smoke-free," "the city went smoke-free in 2009." Notice what the word really claims.

Smoke-free describes說的是 where smoking is not allowed不准吸菸的 a place地方——a smoke-free restaurant無菸餐廳、a smoke-free office無菸辦公室、a smoke-free campus無菸校園。It它 is an adjective是形容詞,before a noun放在名詞前時 usually written with a hyphen通常寫成帶連字號,and it can also sit它也可以坐 after the verb在動詞後面:"the whole building is smoke-free"整棟樓都禁菸、"the city went smoke-free in 2009"這座城市2009年起全面禁菸。Notice注意 the word這個字 what really claims真正主張的是什麼

It does not mean nobody happens to be smoking at the moment; it means there is a rule, and the rule is being announced. So a sign saying SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT is a polite way of saying no smoking here — the positive wording makes it sound like a benefit rather than an order, which is exactly why public health campaigns chose it. That is worth noticing: the word was designed to sound welcoming.

It它 does not mean不是說 at the moment此刻 nobody happens to be smoking剛好沒有人在吸菸;it means它是說 there is a rule有一條規定,and而 the rule這條規定 is being announced正被公告出來。So所以 a sign saying一塊寫著 SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT的牌子,is a polite way of saying是客氣地在說 no smoking here這裡不准吸菸——the positive wording正面的措辭 makes it sound like讓它聽起來像 a benefit一項好處 rather than an order而不是一道命令,which is exactly why而這正是 public health campaigns公共衛生宣導 chose it選中它的原因。That那 is worth noticing值得注意:the word這個字 was designed to sound是被設計成聽起來 welcoming親切友善的

There is a second, less common use about people: a smoke-free life, or someone who is now smoke-free, meaning they have stopped smoking. That one is mostly heard in health advice and quit-smoking programmes.

about people用在人身上 There is有 a second, less common use第二種比較少見的用法:a smoke-free life無菸的生活,or someone who is now smoke-free或一個現在smoke-free的人,meaning意思是 they have stopped smoking他們已經戒菸了。That one那個用法 mostly大多 in health advice and quit-smoking programmes在健康建議和戒菸計畫裡 is heard聽到

In Taiwan the word turns up in English signs at airports, hotels and hospitals, and matches 禁菸 on the Chinese side of the same sign.

組成smoke + -free. The -free ending means 'without this thing, and that is a good thing' — it is a whole family of words: sugar-free, duty-free, oil-free, stress-free. It comes from free in the old sense of 'released from, not burdened by', not from free meaning no money.

同家族的字

  • sugar-freesame -free ending, same 'without, happily' meaning
  • duty-freesame -free ending; free of tax rather than free of charge
  • carefreethe oldest of this group — free from worry
